A bass-driven, downtempo style of soul music often incorporating electronic elements that was popular in the UK from the late 1980s through the 1990s.
Street Soul, unlike other more London-centric urban styles before it, was produced regionally in the UK (e.g. Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bradford - urban centres with large black populations) and tracks enjoyed significant exposure on pirate radio stations.
Commensurate with its popularity on pirate radio, Street Soul was a distinctively DIY style. Independent labels, white label promos, limited distribution and general low-budget production are all common to UK Street Soul releases.
