In order to convert from md's word generated HTML, I did the following process: go to page to copy, view source, copy all, paste to dreamweaver, clean word html, copy and paste to , convert, remove div / body / and html tags, paste to Discogs Wiki

I don't think we need to focus on the blank space, it's fine if folk want to list it, but let's keep this example as simple as possible. I wonder if 'Untitled' is a good idea, as it implies there is something there. I have listed my second example as (no audio), perhaps we need to decide on something like this as a standard way to list silence?

Proposed Guideline

Hidden tracks on CDs are usualy made as one audio track with two songs/tunes and an area of blank space inbetween. List a hidden track on a CD like so:

1 A Song (7:54)
2 The Other Song (6:43)
3 A Rocking Song (6:44)
4.1 A Final Song (14:29)
4.2 The Hidden Song (6:08)

And add a small explanation to the notes: Track 4 contains a hidden track (track 4.2). Track 4.1 lasts for 7:13 before a period of silence.

You can also list the silence like this if you want:

1 A Song (7:54)
2 The Other Song (6:43)
3 A Rocking Song (6:44)
4.1 A Final Song (7.13)
4.2 (no audio) (7:16)
4.3 The Hidden Song (6:08)

The main thing is to make it clear to whoever reads the information that there is a hidden track.

SJCEE How about using the Word "Hidden Track" in the tracklist instead of adding an fictive number? I think listing "no audio" is redundant...

That would be another way of doing it, yes. I don't think, however, that using 4.1, 4.2 etc is fictitious, as the hidden track does have a track number. Nik 06:31, 17 October 2006 (PDT)

i'd submit it this way:

the tracklisting is corresponding to the track indexes on the CD then. if i don't know the name of the hidden song, i'd do it this way:

Md 03:50, 5 December 2006 (PST) I don't think (no audio) is a viable option as people will start entering data tracks etc like this. perhaps (silence) but I think one of the above examples will work. My preference is for the first example.

Written By vs. Written-By

Written-By - This version of the Written By credit is linked. It is used in the same way as all other linked credits. Note the dash between the words: '-'; it is vital that the credit is entered in exactly this way.

Written By - This is a special unlinked role that can be used to group all credited writers of the music and display their names as formatted on the release. e.g. Lennon/McCartney. If the full name of the artist is displayed on the release you must use the linked Written-By credit, but can also use the unlinked credit if the formatting is of significance. The Artist Name Variation function should also be considered when deciding which credit should be used.

--Nik 10:16, 2 February 2007 (PST) Removed "The unlinked Written By credit can also be used on a release to indicate the exact way in which artist names are formatted on a release" from the Written-By paragraph as this seems incorrect / redundant. Adding these two paragraphs to the main credit page as well.

Why doesn’t Discogs work like Wikipedia?

Because Discogs’ focus is on accuracy and completeness, and the fact that the submission process can be quite complex, it is not possible to allow content to be added without first being moderated. The moderation system ensures that the database is grown and maintained with the minimum of error.

This suggestion was made obsolete by Discogs v4, which makes Discogs work somewhat like Wikipedia, with unreviewed data being immediately exposed to users, many of whom have the option of commenting on and/or assessing the data's quality.

How to display information on cover versions

There are no Discogs credits specifically to credit the original artists for cover versions. If the original composer/writer is credited on a release containing a cover version, you can use the relevant credit as appropriate, and the version will be linked from the composer/writers page. Cover versions can also be mentioned in the Release Notes.

Md 07:17, 17 October 2006 (PDT) : Agreed on the desire for coding in Release Notes. I did not mention it because it is not activated and this exercise was intended as a revision of existing processes. If it can be quickly introduced that would be useful. Suspect we would want to convert all HTML at the same time as HTML should be blocked entirely and doing so would create a mess in existing notes.

Releases with non-English languages?

The default language of Discogs is English, however, Discogs supports unicode 1 and allows submissions in any language and character set.

Releases should always be submitted in their primary original language / character set. In cases of two or more languages been given the same emphasis on the release, the primary language of the issuing label or country should be used.

Artist names should also be entered as they appear, and an ANV {link} used as appropriate if the artist has an English version of their name already in the database. If the artist doesn't have an English version of their name, their native language version of their name should be used.

Discogs is planing a release translation function for the future, where (for example) Japanese language releases can be transcribed to rōmaji.

Are one-off acetates/dubplates, etc allowed?

The following types of releases are not valid for Discogs:

  • One-off acetates/dubplates

  • Limited, non-commercial runs of less than 50 items of recordable media (cassette, CDr)

  • ??????

This is still a sticky point, it is dead hard to draw this line. We all know we don't want Little Jimmy's home made CD's in the database, but I also know there are some very rare items (only 3 in existence?) in the database as it stands. Should the perceived profile and standing of the artist come into this?

Md 07:22, 17 October 2006 (PDT) this is why I specified recordable media. I own a 12" record that exists in only 3 copies but it's a proper vinyl pressing. This is very different to someone copying 5 CDrs and giving them to their mates. There must be some criteria for this otherwise the credibility of acceptance is i) vague ii) subjective iii) inconsistent. I also don't think it should matter if it's Little Jimmy or Michael Jackson - criteria should be set and applied to all. However I'm not sure where the lines need to be drawn and how best to define them.

No credits for companies/non-humans

Credits should not be created for non-human entities such as mastering companies, recording studios, or pressing plants. If you know that the credit in question refers to such an entity, the credit must be listed in Release Notes.

Whether we accept releases from genres not live on Discogs "for completion"

Discogs does not currently accept submissions of releases in all known music/audio genres. This can result in “holes” in the discographies of some record labels & artists, however please do not try to bypass the system by submitting releases with incorrect or inappropriate Genre/Style combinations simply in order to fill such holes. Discogs aims to expand the Genres it accepts as time goes on. For the purposes of keeping your own personal collection catalogued, remember that you can add Draft entries to your Discogs Collection and keep track of it that way, rather than submitting invalid releases to the database.

Sub tracks - e.g. 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 on DJ mixes that comprise one track on a CD.

Seperate songs or tunes that are rolled into one track on a CD, LP etc should be listed using a point and then a number:

Updating artists/labels that have no releases (update blocked)

Occasionally due to updates to the database an artist or label link can be left in the In Groups, Alias or Parent Label listings of live entries, despite having no releases attached to it. If you find such entries please use the Discogs forum to bring these to the attention of moderators and request a clean-up.

Md 07:27, 17 October 2006 (PDT) good idea, as long as we keep an eye on the topic to make sure it doesn't expire. However - many users will ignore it and post their own topics, and after a while you stop "seeing" long standing stickies on the screen anyway.

The submission process

Add Release Submissions

When you submit releases or updates on Discogs, your submission will be in one of five different states:

Draft– A release in draft status is not in any submission queue and cannot be voted on by Discogs moderators or seen by any user browsing the pending queues. A draft is located in the “Draft Releases” folder on your 'My Discogs' page 2. From there you can edit your drafts any number of times before submitting it to the Add Releases queue, at which point it enters Pending status.

Note: Drafts do create a release entry with a http://www.discogs.com/release/XXXXX URL. This can be found by clicking the release title link in the “Draft Releases” folder. Other users can view your draft if you share this URL - this can be useful if you need to ask for advice on the forums, etc.

Pending – A submission in pending status is in one of the submission queues (which queue will depend on the type of submission and the genres it relates to) and can be seen by all Discogs users by either browsing the queue itself or the Discogs pages of the artists/labels contained on the submission.

Any Discogs member (including yourself) can comment on your submission while it is in pending status, but only moderators with voting rights in the relevant genres can vote on your submission. You can add or read any comments on your submission by clicking the 'view' link in the 'Pending' folder on the 'My Discogs page 3.

On Add Release submissions only, if you receive comments advising of required changes you can edit your submission without changing its pending status or its position in the queue, but only if the submission has not yet received any votes. To edit a release in pending status go to the 'Pending' folder on the 'My Discogs' page, and click the 'edit' link next to your submission.

If 1 Yes or No vote has been placed and you need to edit your Add Release submission, it must be changed to Cancelled status first. This is done from your 'Pending' folder – click the radio button to the left of your submission and press the 'Cancel Submission' button at the bottom of your pending list.

Note: Due to high submission volumes and the relatively low number of moderators it is not unusual for submissions to remain in Pending status for up to 3 months before receiving attention from moderators. All efforts are made to keep this wait time to a minimum but please be patient.

Cancelled – A submission that has been cancelled by you via your Pending folder will enter Cancelled status. A cancelled submission is not in any submission queue. Cancelled Add Release submissions are moved to the 'Draft Releases' folder, from where you can click the 'view' link to check any previous moderator comments, or click the 'edit' link to edit your submission before resubmitting (if appropriate).

Rejected – A submission that has received 2 No votes from moderators will enter Rejected status. A rejected submission is not in any submission queue. Rejected Add Release submissions are moved to the 'Draft Releases' folder, from where you can click the 'view' link to check any previous moderator comments, or click the 'edit' link to edit your submission before resubmitting (if appropriate).

Accepted – A submission that has received 2 Yes votes from moderators will enter Accepted status. Accepted Add Release submissions will become live in the Discogs database.


Updates to submissions are handled very differently from full submissions. Updates are not as versatile, and most actions apart from 'Pending' and 'Submitted' will result in the loss of any data added during the update.

Draft– This status is not applicable to updates.

Pending – An update in pending status is in one of the submission queues (which queue will depend on the type of submission and the genres it relates to) and can be seen by all Discogs users by either browsing the queue itself or the Discogs pages of the artists/labels contained on the submission. Unlike pending Add Release submissions, updates can not be edited at any stage after submission.

Cancelled – Cancelled update submissions are not moved to 'Draft Releases' and must be resubmitted from the beginning if appropriate.

Rejected – Rejected update submissions are not moved to “Draft Releases” and must be resubmitted from the beginning if appropriate.

Accepted - Accepted update submissions will now take effect in the live database.

Grouped Releases

If you are submitting an item that was released only as part of a package with another item (e.g. a bonus or limited edition CD or 12" that was released with an album, but never released on its own) then it should be submitted as a discrete Discogs entry that includes all items in the package.


Artist A releases "The Album" on CD and LP in January 2007. Early copies of both formats are sold along with a limited edition bonus CD, and some copies of the LP version appear packaged with a limited edition bonus 12" but no bonus CD. When these limited items are sold out the album can only be bought on its own with no bonus items packaged with either format.

This allows for the following release entries in Discogs:

the CD album with bonus CD:

Artist A - "The Album" (CD) + (CD, Limited Edition)

the LP album with bonus 12":
