Dev LabelCompany Proposal Sep 2007

NOTE - THIS IS NOT A FINALISED OR OFFICIAL PLAN, AND IS SUBJECT TO
CHANGE!

Label update

The current label pages will be updated to a more generic
www.discogs.com/list-releases/LabelCompanyName page. Existing label
pages will forward to the new pages.

New Label / Company section

The current label / cat# section will be overhauled so we can enter
more information than previously. The initial form will have these
fields (or similar - layout to be finalised):

"Label Role Dropdown" : "LabelCompany Name free text"

"Cat# Dropdown" : "Cat# free text" : "Add another cat# button"

"Add another label / company button"

A system maxtix (as used for formats) will bring up other fields as
needed, for example (for publishers):

"Label Role Dropdown" : "LabelCompany Name free text"

"Cat# Dropdown" : "Cat# free text" : "Add another cat# button"

Track Positions : "Track position free text field"

"Add another label / company button"

Labels set to "Worldwide / Undefined" country fields on their pages
would bring up a country field on the form:

"Label Role Dropdown" : "LabelCompany Name free text"

"Cat# Dropdown" : "Cat# free text" : "Add another cat# button"

Country : "Country Dropdown"

"Add another label / company button

The cat# dropdown menu could be tied in with the label and company
menu, the same way that the format menus are tied together, so that
selection is limited to correct matches (i.e. label code only is allowed
for labels).

Rules

All information should be listed as on release.

Label and company names can sometimes have small changes (for example
the dropping of the "Records" from "LabelName Records"). In such
instances, the fullest name should be used, with previous releases in
the database updated if needed. However, if a label or company has a
more substantial name change, it must be entered as a separate label
(connections between these types of labels can be developed later).

Required fields will have to be flexible. Some releases will contain no
company or label information, others will contain full details. The
submitter should provide at least enough information to distinguish it
as a unique release. Unfortunately, this can vary a lot from release to
release, and may not be apparent until after the release is accepted to
the database (for example, when someone wishes to add another variation
of the release).

Issues

Country field

Further to this thread from the editors forum
Dev-LabelCompany-Proposal-Editor-Thread-Country,
the country role needs revised. The country field is possably the most
problematic. An argument can be made to move the country field to the
label / company pages, but the division can sometimes be indistinct or
indefinable (a label with offices in two or more countries?). The
present country field represents where the release was released, but as
Stormbringer has pointed out in the eds forum
http://www.discogs.com/forums/topic?topic_id=122983, a lot of the time
this is guesswork or hearsay, rather than hard facts as represented on
the release.

One possible solution is to move the country field to the label pages,
including an "unspecified / worldwide" selection for the majors. Then,
country may only be selected on the form, as long as the country on the
label / company page is selected as "unspecified / worldwide". This way,
or something like it, perhaps we can cater for both small and large
labels in a reasonably easy, accurate, and intuitive way?

Could the country field be incorporated into the Catalog number and
other codes and numbers drop down fields (question for Kevin)?

Updating the country field

If the country field was removed from it's present place, we could
incorparate it into the new fields like this:

UpdateBot scans all labels releases for country field. Labels where all
the country fields are the same get the country field moved to the label
page. labels where the country field is different on some releases will
be set to "Worldwide / Undefined" on the label page, and the country
field will be added to the new per-label/company country field.

Updating to the new system

Updating should be reasonably simple, as this is just extending the
current functionality. No special translation is needed apart from the
country field.
