Catalog Number Discussion

This is a page to try to help us find the best method / compromise for
entering and sorting catalog numbers.

Don't manipulate cat#s - only enter real cat#s

Pro:

  • Simple and accurate data entry

Con:

  • Sort order is impossible in many cases
  • Some examples have more than one real cat#, how to choose?
  • Cat# list hard to read
  • Existing data doesn't fit in to the concept

Manipulate cat#s to sort properly - current Discogs system

Pro:

  • Sort order is possible
  • Variations in cat#s can be ironed out
  • Cat# list easy to read
  • Existing data fits

Con:

  • Data skewed
  • Data entry more involved

Combined system (current proposal) - multiple cat#s can be entered, 1st one is always used as the sort number

Pro:

  • Sort order is possible
  • Variations in cat#s can be entered
  • Cat# list easy to read
  • Complete data entry
  • Existing data can be fitted in

Con:

  • Data entry more involved
  • Real cat# as on release tricky to know for sure in some cases

Separate system - use definite separate fields for sort cat# and real cat#/s

Pro:

  • Sort order is possible
  • Variations in cat#s can be entered
  • Cat# list easy to read
  • Accurate and complete data entry
  • Real cat#/s as on release clear
  • Existing data can be fitted in

Con:

  • Data entry demands duplicate information for simple examples
  • Data entry more involved
  • Expanded display room taken up with possible multiple identical
    cat#s
